Objective: Publicly-owned hotels and hostels to deliver the profits of tourism to local communities
To effectively redirect the value of tourism to local communities, Puerto Rico should open publicly-owned hotels similar to the beautiful and high-quality Paradores (state-owned hotels) of Spain that have been running successfully since 1928. These public-interest hotels will create local jobs and retain the profits from tourism for the benefit of local communities.
Any necessary construction and renovations could be part of the public works projects proposed as one of the four key component of the Puerto Rico Brillante plan. Historic buildings could be also be restored and preserved in the process.
